The figures are stretched and elongated, revealing bones illuminated beneath the skin. Faces retreat into shadow, hidden by hair or dissolved into darkness. These distortions are not attempts at realism but reflections of perception—how the body can become both familiar and estranged, desired and rejected, visible and concealed.

The first painting in this series was created over the reverse side of a still life I had come to dislike. Bright colors gave way to a darker, more restrained palette. I painted myself in search of a detail I might learn to value within a body I often reduced to flesh, fat, skin, and bone.

As the series developed, so did my relationship to the work. Love, peace, pain, illness, surgery, and recovery, along with the body’s continuous transformation, altered its meaning. The illuminated skeletal forms became more than symbols of an imagined ideal; they became reminders of the concealed architecture that sustains us. The body ceased to be merely an object of criticism and became evidence of survival and strength.

These paintings do not offer resolution. They document an ongoing negotiation between self-perception and self-acceptance. As the series progresses, more of the face may emerge—not as a conclusion, but as a gradual movement toward visibility: a slow reconciliation between the self and the body that stayed.
